My Musing ~ A Part of the Pattern by L.L. Bartlett

A Part of the Pattern by L.L. Bartlett is the 7th book in the “Jeff Resnick’s Personal Files” mini-mystery series. Publisher: Polaris Press, coming September 18, 2017

Ex-insurance investigator Jeff Resnick finds himself drawn to solving crimes. His brother, Richard, thinks that could be the basis of a paying business. Reluctantly, Jeff agrees, and their first case is about a child who vanished more than two decades before. Meanwhile, Jeff bumps into an acquaintance whose history is very similar to that of the missing girl. Is it coincidence or is there a pattern that links him to her and his future?

In their latest adventure, Richard and Jeff have their first and only case and it is by happenstance that an acquaintance Jeff met years ago, plays heavily in this fast-paced short story. Fitting the pieces of the past and the present gives Jeff the ammunition he needs to solve this puzzle with an unexpected bonus in both his personal and professional life. I love this series and the author always grabs my attention with the narrative that keeps me engaged in this intriguing tale of confirmation. This is another great read and I look forward to more forays with R&A Insights.

My Musing ~ Shattered Spirits by L.L. Bartlett

Shattered Spirits by L.L. Bartlett is the 7th book in the “Jeff Resnick” mystery series. Publisher: Polaris Press, July 2016

Shattered SpiritsIf it weren’t for bad luck, Jeff Resnick would have no luck at all!

While riding his new racing bike, Jeff is hit by an SUV, an accident which has a cascade effect on his life. He loses his job to a replacement, his girlfriend pressures him to move in, his bank accounts are hacked, and a restless spirit begs for his help—all in less than a week. But it’s soon apparent that his so-called random accident is anything but, and the murder of a close friend has a hobbled Jeff on the run. Can he discover who’s out to destroy his life—and threaten those he loves most?

What a great set-up. A mugging. A murder. A death. A ghost. A destination. All intertwined in a complex story that gleams a mystifying tale of suspense and intrigue. An explosion of senses is exposed in this fast-paced drama that blew me out of the water with the narrative and actions of those involved. The innocence in how this case started, the fury from the past and the aftermath takes Jeff to a different level on the playing field. As usual, I enjoy my time spent with Jeff and his friends. This was a great read and I can’t wait to read the next book in this terrific series.

It’s been two years since the mugging that nearly killed him, and Jeff Resnick is finally putting his life back together. But his sense of peace is shattered when the detective investigating his wife’s murder calls to update him on the cold case. Jeff’s wonders if his sixth sense can help him find the man who killed Shelley Resnick–and what would he do if he does?

This is one of my favorite series. I enjoyed this short story that took Jeff and Rich on a journey that needed to be done. Will he or will he not? A mystery with an answer that is worth its weight for the love of his new family. A completely great story with a satisfying ending. I look forward to Jeff moving forward now that he has his much needed closure.

My Musing ~ Crybaby by L.L. Bartlett

CrybabyCrybaby by L.L. Bartlett is the 5th short story in the “Jeff Resnick” mystery series. Publisher: Polaris Press, February 2015

Jeff Resnick—babysitter? It wasn’t a reference that had ever graced his personal résumé, but when he’s entrusted to care for his brother’s most prized possession—his infant daughter—Jeff is tested in ways he could never have anticipated. With his girlfriend Maggie unavailable, Jeff has only one person he can turn to for advice when his tiny niece falls ill on his watch.

This was a nice short story letting us see a different side of Jeff Resnick. The care and ministration he gave towards his nice shows how much Jeff has grown since he re-entered Richard’s life. A good read and I’m looking forward to the next chapters in Jeff’s life.

My Musing ~ Spooked! by L.L. Bartlett

The trick-or-treaters have gone home and now it’s time for the adults to celebrate All Hallows Eve. When Maggie suggests they consult an Ouija board, Jeff Resnick thinks it’ll be anything but fun. And when they conjure up a ghost from Jeff’s past, the game turns dangerous for the most vulnerable person in his life. (This short story directly follows Dark Waters.)

Loved this Halloween tease that begins with a game and ends with a . . . you’ll just have to read it yourself. Another great read that has me hungry for more Jeff Resnick stories.

A Day In The Life With Jeff Resnick by L.L. Bartlett

Dark WatersIn my garden

Real life is LOUD. For someone like me, who suffers skull-pounding headaches, noise can practically incapacitate me.

I used to be immune to noise, back when I lived in the Big Apple. It was like background music. But since I had my head split by a couple of street thugs, my life has drastically changed. The sports bar where I work isn’t too bad. The sound on the TV is on mute, with closed-captioning, and the guys who watch it do their own commentary. It’s far enough away from the bar that the whooping and hollering isn’t in my face.

Thanks to the generosity of my older half-brother, Richard, I live on a peaceful street. Usually the loudest noise to fracture the quiet is the screeching of a jay or the caw of a crow. I can handle that. And the peace I gain from my garden is priceless.

But the garden is no longer my safe haven. On a recentPansy_Atlas_Mix fall day, deadheading the annuals changed my life forever when I grabbed a bumblebee that had been darting among the petals. The next thing I knew, I’d been stung, watching the spec on my hand turn into a welt, and then I came over all cold and my throat started to close. Luckily, I was speaking to my sister-in-law, a nurse, at the time, or I’d have been a goner.

But it wasn’t just anaphylactic shock that scared the bejeepers out of me. Everything went dark, and then there was this terrible bright light, hauling me up toward it—pulling me away from everything I knew and loved—including my life.

near_deathA shot of epinephrine brought me back to the here and now, and I intend to stay here … and yet, I have a funny feeling that all is not as it should be. That there are people, things, and events conspiring to make that near-death experience become a reality.

I’m afraid. Very afraid.

Meet the author
The immensely popular “Booktown” Mystery series is what put Lorraine Bartlett’s pen name Lorna Barrett on the New York Times Bestseller list, but it’s her talent — whether writing as Lorna, or L.L. Bartlett, or Lorraine Bartlett — that keeps her there. This multi-published, Agatha-nominated author pens the exciting “Jeff Resnick” Mysteries as well as the acclaimed “Victoria Square” Mystery series, and now the “Tales of Telenia” fantasy saga, and has many short stories and novellas to her name(s). Check out the links to all her works here: www.LLBartlett.com

Lorraine’s latest release is Dark Waters, the 6th Jeff Resnick Mystery was released October 1. A near-death experience colors Jeff Resnick’s life, but his investigation into the death of a racketeer puts him in jeopardy as he searches for missing assets.

Dark Waters by L.L. Bartlett

Dark WatersDark Waters by L.L. Bartlett is the sixth book in the “Jeff Resnick” mystery series. Publisher: L.L. Bartlett, October 2013

A near death experience is only the beginning of Jeff Resnick’s troubles. Family comes to town, but one of them, a nephew who reminds Jeff of the thugs who mugged him, has unsettled him. He’s on edge. The fact that his brother has taken possession of an expensive boat through an IRS auction takes his mind off the bad vibes he’s getting from other relatives. But that yacht holds a deadly secret, one destined to turn his world upside down. Will Jeff figure out the puzzle before his vision of near death becomes a reality?

When an unexpected visitor arrives at the house, it dredges up traumatic memories for Jeff. Looking for distractions, Jeff agrees to help his friend investigate a recent murder despite the beckoning of an ominous message from beyond.

L.L. has done it again by delivering a fast paced action-filled drama that took me on a wild ride in this riveting tale of suspense that quickly became a page-turner. The author did a good job in moving this mystery along as I was filled with anticipation as to how it was all going end with the culmination of events that plagued the protagonist in this engagingly propelling tale. This is the by far the best book in this gripping series and I can’t wait for the next chilling adventures with Jeff and her friends.

Room At The Inn by L.L. Bartlett

Room At The Inn by L.L. Bartlett is the 5th book in the “Jeff Resnick” mystery series. Publisher: L.L. Bartlett, September 2012

Jeff Resnick is definitely out of his element when he and Maggie take a working vacation at a quaint Vermont inn. For most people, the chance to spend time with a beautiful woman in a romantic, isolated setting would be a plus, but the moment Jeff crosses the Sugar Maple Inn’s threshold, his sixth sense warns him that someone is about to meet a violent death.

His anxiety intensifies when he travels on one of the local roads and he is nearly overwhelmed by feelings of impending doom. Ultimately, Jeff can only find respite in his brother Richard’s presence and it is only after one of the inn’s guests is murdered that Richard reluctantly becomes a third wheel on Jeff and Maggie’s trip. With their own lives at stake, Jeff, Maggie, and Richard must use all their wits and skill to bring a ruthless killer to justice. And if they don’t, one of them might just become the next victim.

A freelance assignment has both Jeff and Maggie traveling to Stowe, Vermont to photograph an inn that belongs to a classmate of Maggie. Upon arriving at the inn, Jeff sensed something sinister and when tragedy struck, Jeff knows he’ll need all the help he can get to avoid an early check-out.

L.L. has done it again, she’s written a great book that I could not put down and devoured from beginning to end. The mystery was good as it kept me guessing throughout most of this suspense-fully written drama. The action never stopped in this gripping tale of murder and mayhem and I applaud the author in delivering a fantastically riveting read. I can’t wait for the next book in this exciting and wonderful series.
