A Day in the Life with Megan Luz by Diane Kelly

Paw and OrderOccupation: Fort Worth Police Officer

As part of a K-9 team, my day starts with feeding my furry, four-footed partner Brigit and taking her outside for a quick walk. The two of us not only work together, but we live together, too. The arrangement is all part of solidifying our “pack.”

Though I bought a nice, comfy bed for Brigit, she only uses it when lounging in front of the television watching Animal Planet. The rest of the time she insists on sleeping on my futon with me. Yeah, the two of us are still working out our place in the pack. That’s what happens when two smart, stubborn females are paired together. Both of us want to be the alpha.

Despite our constant head-butting off duty, on duty the two of us make an unbeatable team. While I can put clues together, handcuff a suspect, and recite Miranda rights, Brigit can chase and tackle fleeing suspects I’d never be able to catch. She can also sniff them out, too, when they try to hide.

Chief Garelik reassigned me and Brigit from our usual beat to work the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo. The annual three-week event attracts every rowdy shit-kicker in a hundred-mile radius, and livestock dealers from even farther away. Attending the event as a civilian can be fun. Working it as a cop is not. Too many drunks. Too much noise. Too many feet that could step on my partner’s paws. Besides, Brigit keeps eyeing the goats and pigs and chickens in the livestock barns and licking her lips. If I don’t keep a tight enough grip on her leash, she just might jump into a pen, take down a Brahma bull, and enjoy a rare steak.

Unfortunately, while most people attend the rodeo to see the animals, listen the bands, and ride the rides or play the games at the midway, someone has been using the event as an opportunity to snatch purses and pick pockets. Brigit and I have kept our noses to the ground—her, literally and me, figuratively. So far, we’ve been unable to nail the culprit, but I have no doubt we’ll figure things out. The two of us have dogged determination.

Meanwhile, we’ve been having some fun with Clint McCutcheon, a mounted deputy with the Tarrant Country Sheriff’s Department who’s also been assigned to work the event. I know, I know. If I want things to work out with Seth, the bomb squad officer, I shouldn’t be flirting with Clint, accepting his advances. But Seth broke my heart last fall and if he thinks he can get me back without working for it, he’s got another thing coming. Besides, a little jealousy might teach him not to take me for granted.

So, all in all, my days are one-part patrol, one-part crime-solving, and one part romance. A good balance, wouldn’t you say?

I hope you’ll enjoy my adventures in Paw and Order, the second book in the “Paw Enforcement” mystery series, published by St. Martin’s Press. And look for book #3, Laying Down the Paw, next August. The first book in the series is Paw Enforcement.

My Musing ~ Paw and Order by Diane Kelly

Paw and OrderPaw and Order by Diane Kelly is the second book in the “Paw Enforcement” mystery series. Publisher: St. Martin’s Press, December 2014

Police officer Megan Luz and her loyal K-9 partner Brigit are back on the beat—and under the gun—when the local rodeo show goes to the dogs. . .

After capturing the notorious Fort Worth “Tunabomber,” Megan and Brigit are practically celebrities. Which is why the police chief lassoed them into doing rodeo duty —mostly as a public relations stunt for the department. Megan’s not a fan of calf roping, bull riding, or goat milking contests. But when a thief appears to be working the circuit, her trusty K-9 partner starts sniffing for clues. . .

The culprit is “Robin Hood,” a young Texas golddigger who steals from the rich to give to the poor—namely, herself. With Brigit hot on the trail, Megan has to juggle her on-again off-again reputation in the FWPD with her on-again off-again relationship with sexy bomb-squader Seth Rutledge. This time, Megan is determined to rope in her suspect and her man…before chaos, and/or her trusted furry partner, is unleashed.

Megan, who has higher aspiration within the police department, is on point with her K9 partner, Brigit, as they track a thief on the rodeo grounds. I like the approach the author takes in the telling of this drama, ala Columbo. . .we know who is behind the theft, it’s following Megan as she put all the pieces together to capture her prey that kept me reading on. I also enjoyed how Megan’s and Seth’s personal relationship played out in this book as it was very entertaining. This is a fun read and I love Megan’s internal dialogue and Brigit’s who has an ulterior motive as to the shenanigans she displays at the expense of Megan’s closet. I’m looking forward to the next book in this terrific series.

Death, Taxes, and Silver Spurs by Diane Kelly

Death Taxes and Silver SpursDeath, Taxes, and Silver Spurs by Diane Kelly is the 7th book in the “Tara Holloway” romantic mystery series. Publisher: St. Martin’s Paperbacks, July 2014

So maybe it goes without saying that IRS Special Agent Tara Holloway is star-struck? In Death, Taxes, and Silver Spurs, she’s head over heels…in trouble. Easy’s getting harder every day for Tara. A tax-evading pet groomer managed to buzz off a big chunk of her hair…just in time for her date strictly-business meeting with country-music heartthrob Brazos Rivers. Of course Tara shouldn’t care—she’s devoted to Special Agent Nick Pratt, after all—but Rivers does know how to steal a woman’s heart with a song…

Meanwhile, Tara’s up to her fracking neck with another case: A natural-gas company with a money trail that is almost as suspicious as Brazos Rivers’s tax return. Which is to say, he can’t seem to cough up one. Tara figures the misdeeds of her celebrity crush must be an oversight. But will she dance to a different tune…when her tax-evading idol starts evading her, too?

This fast-paced drama kept me glued to the pages from the moment I turned the first page with the comedic escapades that makes Tara the best darn tootin’ gun-slinging IRS agent. You can’t help be amused at the hilarity that is Tara as she tackles her cases. Diane Kelly does a great job in blending humor, romance, and non-stop action that flows easily from chapter to chapter as she teases us with how the perpetrator is going to be caught and will it be easy or hard. I love this series and this book in the best one yet is this amusingly entertaining series. I can’t wait for the next one which adventures await Tara and her friends.

A Few Words From IRS Senior Special Agent Nick Pratt by Diane Kelly

Death Taxes and Silver SpursThere are a number of things I admire about my girlfriend and coworker, IRS Special Agent Tara Holloway. She’s cute and clever, feisty and tenacious. Affectionate, too, but I’m a gentlemen so I won’t go into detail about that. You’ll just have to use your imagination . . . or read Tara’s books.

Gotta say, though, my ass is more than a little chapped right now. Tara’s gone gaga over the target in her latest case, country-western superstar Brazos Rivers. Tara thinks the guy hung the moon. I think he’s a no-talent man whore. Really, what kind of guy parades around shirtless on stage singing “Baby, if you’re willing, let’s do some horizontal drilling?”

Needless to say, this difference in perspective has led to a rough patch in me and Tara’s relationship.

Brazos has several platinum records and a pair of shiny silver spurs. But what he doesn’t have is a paid-up tax account. Yep, despite the fact that he’s earned millions through record deals, concerts, and product endorsements, the guy has never filed a tax return or paid a penny in taxes. Tara thinks his failure to file his returns is a mere oversight. I, on the hand, think Brazos is trying to pull a fast one.

In the meantime, I’m trying to grin and bear it, hoping Tara will come to her senses and realize that Brazos Rivers and those jingle-jangling silver spurs of his are up to no good. But I’ve never been good at grinning and bearing it. I just might have to force my way into this case and take that bastard down myself . . .

You can read more about Nick in Death, Taxes, and Silver Spurs, the 7th book in the “Tara Holloway” mystery series, published by St. Martin’s. The first book in the series is Death, Taxes, and a French Manicure. Books are available at retail and online booksellers.

Paw Enforcement by Diane Kelly

Paw EnforcementPaw Enforcement by Diane Kelly is the first book in the “Paw Enforcement” mystery series. Publisher: Kensington, June 2014

Paw Enforcement introduces police officer Megan Luz and her loyal K-9 partner Brigit — two Fort Worth cops who are worth their weight in kibble.

Officer Luz is lucky she still has a job after tasering a male colleague where it counts the most. Sure, he had it coming—which is why the police chief is giving Megan a second chance. The catch? Her new partner can’t carry a gun, can’t drive a cruiser, and can’t recite the Miranda Rights. Because her new partner is a big furry police dog. So that’s what the chief meant when he called Megan’s partner a real b*tch…

With Brigit out on the beat, Megan is writing up enough tickets to wallpaper the whole station. But when a bomb goes off at the mall’s food court, it’s up to Megan and Brigit to start digging—and sniffing—for clues. With the help of dead-sexy bomb-squad expert Seth Rutledge and his own canine partner named Blast, Megan finds herself in a desperate race to collar a killer. Will justice be served—or will she end up in the doghouse?

Paired with one another, we follow the story of police officer Megan and her new canine partner Sgt. Brigit. I love the format of this book with its sub-heading alerting me as to who is doing the talking. This very enjoyable drama had a comfortable tone, chapters that were easy to follow and some laugh-out-loud moments that was hard to put down as I had to know what was going to happen next. The author did a great job in presenting clues as to who was behind the deadly actions facing Officer Megan with some surprising twists that kept me glued to the pages. Megan is a gutsy heroine who knows what she wants and I’m looking forward to seeing her reach her goal with hopefully more books in this wonderfully engaging and entertaining debut series.

A Day in the Life of K-9 Cop Brigit by Diane Kelly

Paw EnforcementArf-arf! That’s dog-speak for “hello, there.” My name is Sergeant Brigit and I’m a K-9 officer with the Fort Worth Police Department. Being a cop is dangerous work, especially for a K-9 officer like me whose job it is to sniff out drugs, search for bad guys in dark buildings, and take down fleeing criminals. You know, all that stuff that mere humans can’t do.

I was recently paired up with rookie officer Megan Luz. She hasn’t seen much action yet, that’s for sure. Her uniform lacks that essence of terror-induced sweat that can never be fully washed out. Rumor has it she tasered her former partner, Derek “The Big Dick” Mackey, in the nuts after he made some sexist wisecrack. Not a smart move on Megan’s part, even if that jerk had it coming. I can tell Megan has a lot to learn. Fortunately, I’m up to the task of training her. If you ask me, I’m the most skilled cop on the force. I can smell the adrenaline a suspect produces when he’s lying. I can run at speeds up to 30 miles per hour. And I can jump over obstacles up to six feet tall. If not for a lack of opposable thumbs, I’d probably be running the force.

As partners, Megan and I now form a pack, whether we like it or not. I can tell she wasn’t too thrilled when the chief paired us up. Well, I’m not exactly jumping for joy, either. She wears too much flowery cologne, lives in a tiny apartment with no yard, and has organic tofu rather than hot dogs in her fridge. On the bright side, I can smell an entire smorgasbord of shoes in her apartment closet. And on an even brighter side, a recent bombing incident put the two of us in contact with a sexy bomb squad officer and his explosive-sniffing dog Blast. Blast is a yellow lab with gorgeous brown eyes. Bow-chicka-bow-wow. Let’s just say it’s a good thing he’s neutered . . .

Paw Enforcement, the first book in me and Megan’s romantic mystery series, published by St. Martin’s Paperbacks, comes out on June 3rd – just in time for summer beach reaching! Join us again on December 30th, when we return in book #2, Paw and Order.

Comment on this post by 6pm EST on June 7, and you will be entered for a chance to win a copy of PAW ENFORCEMENT. One winner will be chosen at random. Unless specified, U.S. entries only.

Death, Taxes, and Green Tea Ice Cream by Diane Kelly

Death, Taxes, and Green Tea Ice CreamDeath, Taxes, and Green Tea Ice Cream by Diane Kelly is the sixth book in the “Tara Holloway” romantic mystery series. Publisher: St. Martin’s Paperbacks, October 2013

Fired. Tara Holloway can’t believe it. After all she’s done for the IRS, a few too many shots fired from her weapon and suddenly she’s public enemy number one. To add insult to injury, another agent has replaced her, and a ten-million-dollar assault case is hanging over her head. So much for traveling to Tokyo with Special Agent Nick Pratt, former partner and current boyfriend. Tara’s stuck in Texas, and using green tea ice cream to soothe her disappointment, as well as the terrifying prospect of a life behind bars.

Tara’s former boss, Lu “the Lobo” Lobozinski, has a plan—to stick Tara in auditing, where she can’t possibly get into trouble. But between bumping into a college frenemy whose family business is under audit, Tara’s stubborn determination to keep an eye on Nick behind the scenes, and her new long-range rifle, she’s about to get a taste of just how dangerous her life can be, in Death, Taxes, and Green Tea Ice Cream from Diane Kelly.

This was a fun read that was hard to put down as I had to know what happens next as Tara tries to set her life straight. When pushed against the wall, Tara comes out fighting by surrounding herself with people who will fight tooth and nail for her. Diane does a great job in delivering a story that kept me both engaged and entertained with some laugh out loud moments. I love her attention to details as she puts me in the middle of this action-filled drama. Tara is a lovable heroine and I look forward to reading the next book in this fabulous series.

A Day In The Life With Luella Lobozinski by Diane Kelly

Death, Taxes, and Green Tea Ice Cream“The Higher the Hair, the Closer to God”

Hey, there. I’m Luella “Lu” Lobozinski, head of IRS Criminal Investigations in Dallas, Texas. Some people call me the Lobo. Others call me a hard ass. But I’ve got an office to run, special agents to supervise, and millions in past-due taxes to collect. None of that gets done without a few orders being barked and a few butts being kicked along the way.

I’m in my sixties and some people say I’m stuck in the ‘60’s. Sure, I wear my strawberry-blond hair up in an eight-inch beehive and I’m partial to groovy bell-bottom pantsuits trimmed with fringe, but don’t let my fashion choices mislead you. When it comes to collecting past-due taxes from white-collar criminals, I’m totally on my game.

So what’s my typical day like? It’s three gallons of crazy in a two gallon bucket. That’s what.

My job is to supervise a team of crack special agents who investigate cases of suspected tax fraud. Our cases range from low-dollar investigations against small business owners, to mid-size cases against more seasoned financial crooks, to high-dollar cases against drug cartels and celebrities. Heck, we’ve gone after everyone from ice cream truck drivers, to television evangelists, to terrorist organizations. We’ve even pursued the leader of a secessionist group who thinks Texas should be its own country. Silly old coot.

My special agents have their individual strengths, and I assign each investigation to the agent best suited to handle the particular case. If there’s a potential for violence, the case goes to Special Agent Tara Holloway. You might think a male agent would be better suited to face down a vicious criminal, but if so you haven’t met Tara. That girl is the Annie Oakley of the IRS. If she takes a shot with her Glock, she’s going to hit her target, sure as shootin’. She’s creative, resourceful, and she doesn’t back down, even when she’s scared to death. Sure, she gets herself in a heap of trouble operating on the edge like she does, but sometimes a girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do. So long as all of my agents make it home in one piece, I call it a successful day.

Of course things got a little out of hand at the end of book #5 – Death, Taxes, and Hot Pink Leg Warmers. We’ll be dealing with the aftermath in book #6 – Death, Taxes, and Green Tea Ice Cream – which comes out October 1st. Will my best agent be around to fight tax fraud another day? Join us to find out!

Death, Taxes, and Hot-Pink Leg Warmers by Diane Kelly

Hot Pink Leg WarmersDeath, Taxes, and Hot-Pink Leg Warmers by Diane Kelly is the 5th book in the “Tara Holloway” romantic mystery series. Publisher: St. Martin’s Paperbacks, June 2013

It’s bad enough that Tara has to go on trial against the mortgage-frauding “Tennis Racketeers” who cheated banks and homeowners out of millions in between doubles matches. Now she has to go undercover—in a strip club—to strip the sleazeball owner of his indeed illegal livelihood. At least she’s working as a bookkeeper, not a pole dancer. And who needs tips when her undercover crush, Special Agent Nick, is the club’s bodyguard?

With so many hot bodies on display, Tara agrees to join her boss, Lu “the Lobo” Lobozinski, in her daily workouts at the Y. Lu’s on a health kick after recovering from cancer, and she’s pulled her leotards, tights, and hot-pink leg warmers out of mothballs. Which is okay with Tara. If she hopes to put Mr. Geils behind bars, grab the tennis boys by the balls, and lock lips with the unsuspecting Nick, she needs to be in the best shape of her life.

Diane has done it again by delivering a great drama filled with non-stop action and brimming with humor and romance. Tara is back and this time she’s after a strip club owner and when she goes undercover in his club, the fun begins as Tara entangles herself in situations after situations. With Nick as her partner, the pair takes us on a trip that I do not want to get off. This was very enjoyable from start to finish and that ending….WOW. With an eclectic cast of characters and tantalizing dialogue, I’m definitely looking forward to the next book to see how it all turns out in this fantastic series.
