Billionaire Blend: An Excerpt and Giveaway from Cleo Coyle

Billionaire BlendIn my new culinary mystery, Billionaire Blend, coffeehouse manager Clare Cosi is working hard to make a success of a beloved business that’s been serving Greenwich Village for over a century. In this tough economy, it’s a continual struggle to keep her employees happy and her historic coffee shop from falling apart. Then boom! It really falls apart.

Some nut sets off a car bomb on the street outside, badly damaging the landmark building. During the explosion, Clare saves the life of a charming, young billionaire named Eric Thorner, who thanks Clare by hiring her to create the most expensive coffee blend in the world. Unfortunately, the car that was blown sky high belonged to Eric. Someone wants the billionaire dead. But who?

Enjoy this peek at the first chapter…

Billionaire Blend: A Coffeehouse Mystery by Cleo Coyle

Chapter 1
“Guess where I am? You can’t imagine . . .”

Pressing the phone to my ear, I waited for Mike Quinn’s gravelly voice to ride a cellular wave up the Eastern Seaboard.

“Given the choice,” he finally said, “I’d rather imagine . . .”

That shouldn’t have surprised me. After all, Michael Ryan Francis Quinn was a decorated narcotics detective, and if there was one thing the NYPD looked for when recruiting from their uniformed force, it was imagination—that and “inquisitiveness, insight, and an eye for detail.” (According to Quinn, the New York brass referred to these as “the four I’s,” although I had pointed out the last one started with an E.)

For the past six months, Quinn had been working in Washington, DC, where a U.S. attorney had drafted him for a special assignment. He wasn’t permitted to tell me much about his Justice Department job, although I did deduce his Federal Triangle desk phone had caller ID because he always answered my rings with a husky hello reserved only for me.

Just the sound of his voice relieved the tension I’d been feeling about the night ahead. Of course, I didn’t have a clue what was really ahead. If I had, I might have gone straight home and pulled the covers over my eyes.

In a short space of time, I’d be bribing a bomb squad lieutenant, cracking a mathematician’s seventeen-digit passcode, and conjuring culinary ideas for a billionaires’ potluck.

That I could handle. But raiding a forbidden coffee plantation; stopping a Slayer (while working with one); and fixing my daughter’s love life? I think even 007 would have flinched.

At this point in my story, however, my life was manageable, even pretty nice. I was sitting on hand-rubbed leather in a private limo, and a good cop was purring in my ear.

“Let’s see now . . .” Quinn continued. “I’m imagining you in your duplex above the coffeehouse. I’ve got a nice blaze going in the bedroom, the champagne’s poured, and—”

“Mike!”

“Yes?”

I glanced at the glass partition separating me from the male chauffeur. It wasn’t raised all the way.

“I’m not at home,” I explained. “I’m on my way to dinner. You’ll never guess where—”

“You better just tell me, Clare. I have a conference call in twenty.”

The “boyfriend voice” was gone, the warmth chilling into a tone I knew far too well—stoic, emotionless cop.

I should have replied with something generally reassuring, like: “I miss you” (which I did); “I wish you were here” (ditto); or even . . . “On your next visit, I’m baking you up a Triple-Chocolate Italian Cheesecake like the one you inhaled on New Year’s Eve” (which I planned to).

But I didn’t say any of those things. My excitement level was so high that I simply blurted the news—

“I’m riding in a chauffeured limo, on my way to dinner at the Source Club!” The silence stretched on so long I was sure our connection was lost.

“Mike?”

“You’re pulling my leg.”

“I’m not pulling anything.”

I couldn’t blame the man for doubting my words.

Even I had trouble believing it. The Source Club was one of the most élite enclaves in Manhattan. With my anemic bank account, I was lucky to get into Sam’s Club, let alone a zillionaires club.

“So what’s the story? Did your former mother‑in‑law give up and sell the Village Blend to a national chain?”

“Bite your tongue.”

“You inherited a fortune from a lost relative?” He grunted. “Maybe I’d better get you to the altar already—in handcuffs, if necessary…”

  16. The Coffeehouse Series is one series that I have followed since book 1 and I have loved each and every book. The writing is so “upscale” and intelligent and there is so much great information about coffee and the areas of the world that coffee beans come from, and that it is somewhat of a travel journal for me. I enjoy hearing about the roasting of the coffee, and how to pair coffee with various foods and then there are the great recipes in each book as well. The stories are all interconnected and the characters are interwoven but with extremely fantastic writing you could read each book independent of the others and still get enough background information to totally enjoy that particular book, but you sure wouldn’t want to miss any of the others in this series, trust me…. they are that good!!!

What a lovely offer from the authors of a book, a lovely Italian Latte cup AND a package of a wonderful coffee that has a great story that comes along with it. How great is that?

I am in the process of reading Billionaire Blend and I must say that as great as all the other books have been in this series, that this one seems to be my favorite so far. Each book that I have read in this series, I say this is the best one, and so that must mean that they are getting better each time which doesn’t seem possible, but I am sure of it!!! Keep up the great writing, Cleo and Marc. I need my coffee boost as often as you can supply it to me and your other readers.!!!
    Happy Holidays!

I’m dropping in to say thank you to Dru for allowing me to appear on her wonderful blog. And thanks to all of you for your very kind comments!

Marc and I had a grand time writing this entry in our Coffeehouse Mystery series (now celebrating ten years in print, thanks to our fantastic readers). There are plenty of twists and turns in the plot of Billionaire Blend–and ups and downs for the characters. In the end it was a joy to write, and we hope reading it brings *you* joy.

This contest is open for the next week, so keep those entries coming, and to quote the Terminator…I’ll be back!

  49. Hallo, Hallo Coyle duo!

I wanted to express my gratitude for the Coffeehouse mysteries as well, as I came into the series via “Holiday Grind” as I sometimes like to ‘try’ out a series through their Christmas special! Oh, boy, am I thrilled that I had!! Not only did I get wrapped up in the Village Blend, the atmosphere of NYC, but I was drawn into the world due to the strength of the characters! Quirky, precise, and particular they endear us to read more of their stories & adventures! I am always recommending someone to read this series, and I’m determined to progress further into it during 2014! I even have a second hand copy of “On What Grounds!” as I was always ILL’ing the books through my local library, and by the time Book 2 would show up, I’d have forgotten the pacing of the first! Laughs. One day, I promise I’ll be able to get all of the books on my shelf!! They’re too good not to become addicted too! Like a smooth sinful sip of a hot chai latte, the coffeehouse mysteries are a pure euphoric delight to the reader’s senses!! Bless you for continuing to give us something hearty to look forward to devouring!

    Rock on!
(for at least another 10 years!)
    Happy Christmas!!

    Like

    • Beth – In reply to your question, you can do either. I’ve had readers begin with Book #1 and progress through #13, and I have many readers who start with the newest release. Billionaire Blend can be read as a stand-alone book. All of the characters are introduced with enough background that you won’t be lost, and if you enjoy the story, you can always go back and read the earlier books to find out what happened in the past to these characters to land them where they are at this point in the series. Thanks for dropping by, and I hope you give the series a try.

  133. I love the Coffee House Mysteries and so do my library patrons. They have acquired quite a following here in West Virginia and we all eagerly await the newest addition. I am always excited to see a new entry in the series on the library’s ordering list and always put a check mark beside the title so we will get out copy as soon as possible. And since I process the new books, guess who gets first shot at it?

    • Linda – Thank you. There are so many wonderful comments here, I can’t reply to them all, but I do want to recognize the librarians, who have been so supportive. Thank you, again; librarians rock!

I’ve been a huge fan of Cleo Coyle for years. I love the recipes, the knowledge I’ve gotten about coffee in general and the fun mysteries. I started reading the Coffee House mysteries when I first got divorced and Claire’s gumption helped me realize I could do it to. I’m a teacher and a part-time librarian and love how a good book can transport you. One of the great things about the coffee house mysteries are that the characters develop and grow over time. so many times in a cozy mystery series the characters are one-dimensional. I also run a mystery book club at our local library in Old Town Maine and am hoping to do a Coffeehouse mystery next year where each of us could make one of the recipes. We try to have themed food with our book discussions.

    • Katherine – Thank you so much for that heartfelt comment. There are so many kind comments here, but I do want to give a special wave to librarians who have supported our work. Your note is so touching, and if your book club does read any of the Coffeehouse Mysteries, drop me a line at my public box. I may be able to send you some recipe cards.

  136. Can’t wait to read Billionaire Blend. Just last year I was introduced to the Clare Cosi Coffeehouse Mystery series by a friend. For as long as I can remember, I have only read non-fiction. Since I am a coffee lover, as well as a true crime buff, I have devoured the Coffeehouse Mystery series. Thank you Cleo for giving this reader a great mystery to solve along with my morning Joe. Billionaire Blend is #1 on my ‘To Do’ list.

  162. So excited to read the newest addition to the series! Mystery and coffee go so well together, and are two of my favorite things! It takes real talent to keep a series going this long and not have the characters go stale, but Clare and her crew never disappoint and always feel like old friends.

  181. Just me, Cleo, dropping by to say THANK YOU. I nearly fell out of my desk chair when I saw all of these comments. I read every single one, and appreciate the kind thoughts. I did jump in to reply to a few of you, especially the librarians who left comments (because librarians rock) and because their support in widening our readership has meant the world me and Marc.

Thanks again to every one of our readers–whether you are new to the series or have been with us through all 13 books. We’re working on next year’s Coffeehouse Mystery now, and we can only hope we will continue to entertain you and bring joy to your reading life.

My warmest wishes to all of you. Good luck in the drawing…
    Happy Holidays and Happy Reading!
